A motor vehicle speed control system 4, comprises an adaptive cruise control system 6, an own vehicle speed and path determination system 8, a radar unit 10, and means for determining the angular offset 16 of one or more preceding vehicles 20 with respect to the own vehicle 2. The radar unit has at least one radar transmitter 12 and at least one radar receiver 14. The speed and path determination system 8 is capable of measuring and predicting the speed 3 and path 7 of the own motor vehicle 2, calculating the relative position and relative speed of the own motor vehicle 2 with respect to said one or more of the preceding vehicles 20, and determining the extent 18 to which a preceding motor vehicle 20 is in the path 7 of the own motor vehicle 20. The adaptive cruise control system 6 controls the own vehicle speed 3 to control a minimum distance or time headway 22 between the own vehicle 2 and an immediately preceding vehicle 20 in the path 7 of the own vehicle 2. When the immediately preceding vehicle 20 is detected to move out of the path 7 of the own vehicle 2, the headway between the vehicles is progressively reduced. |
