PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a workpiece grasping device formed so as to be usable by mounting it in a spindle of an existing machine tool to be capable of improving general purpose usability. SOLUTION: When a pawl member 19 is moved for clamping a workpiece, an outer cylinder turn lock pin 29a is fitted to a recessed part 16a of a cylindrical member 16 to limit rotation of an outer cylinder 14, also a cone brake plate 31 is separated from the cylindrical member 16 to separate the outer cylinder 14 and a main body 12. When a spindle 3 is rotated in this condition, rotation is generated in not the outer cylinder 14 but a scroll member 20 with the main body 12. A rack tooth 23 of the pawl member 19 is meshed with a scroll tooth 22 of the scroll member 20, and the pawl member 19, by holding it movably only in a radial direction to the outer cylinder 14, is moved in the radial direction in accordance with rotation of the scroll member 20. Since turning force of the spindle 3 is thus utilized, general purpose usability can be improved.
