PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject compound in high yield and purity by simultaneously adding a halogenodinitrobenzene and a mono-alkali metal salt of a specific diol to a reaction system and reacting the halogenodinitrobenzene with the monoalkali metal salt of a specific diol. SOLUTION: A Halogeno-2,4-dinitrobenzene of formula I (X is a halogen; R1 is a 1-20C alkyl or the like; (n) is 0-3) and a mono-alkali metal salt of a diol represented by the formula HO-R2-OH R2 is a group of formula II [R6 is a 1-5C alkyl; (m) is 1-12; (p) is 1-4] or formula III [(r) is 0-2; carbon of phenyl ring may be substituted with N, O or S] or the like) are simultaneously added to a reaction system and the compound of formula I is reacted with the mono- alkaki metal salt of the diol to provide the objective compound of formula IV [e.g. 2-(2',4'-dinitrophenoxy)-ethanol]. The compound of formula I and the mono-alkali metal salt of diol are preferably used at a molar ratio of 1:(1.05-2) and the reaction is carried out usually at 20-130 deg.C, preferably at 40-80 deg.C.
