PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound in high yield by reaction of a hydroxy-substituted naphthalene compound with hydrogen in the presence of a noble metal catalyst in a solvent. SOLUTION: This compound, (E) a compound of formula II (e.g. 7-hydroxy-2- tetralol), is obtained by reaction of (C) a compound of formula I [R1 and R2 are each H or a (protected) hydroxyl group; R3 is a (protected) hydroxyl group] (e.g. 2,7-dihydroxynaphthalene) with (D) hydrogen in the presence of (A) a noble metal catalyst, pref. such a catalyst that at least one noble metal selected from palladium, ruthenium, rhodium, platinum and palladium/silver is carried on a support in (B) a solvent (e.g. tetrahydrofuran, ethyl acetate), pref. in a pressure vessel under a hydrogen pressure of 5-1,000 kPa at 0-150 deg.C; wherein it is preferable that the amount of the component A to be used is 0.0-2 wt.%, calculated as metal, based on the component C, and the amount of the component B to be used is 1-100 wt. times that of the component A.
