PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stop alignment disturbance of a smectic liquid crystal such as an antiferroelectric liquid crystal caused in a light-transmitting region from further proceeding in a non-light transmitting region by forming alignment films as overlapped in the display region of both electrode substrates and subjecting the films to alignment treatment along each light-transmitting region. SOLUTION: This cell is equipped with electrode substrates 10, 20 laminated with an annular seal 30 and having alignment films H10, H20 facing each other in the inside of the seal, light-transmitting regions and non-light transmitting regions 40 alternately formed parallel to each other between the alignment films, and a smectic liquid crystal 50 injected through a liquid crystal injection port to the inside of the seal between the electrode substrates. The alignment films H10, H20 are formed as overlapped in the display region between the electrode substrates and subjected to alignment treatment along each light- transmitting region. By subjecting the alignment films to alignment treatment along each light-transmitting region, proceeding of the alignment disturbance can be immediately stopped by the non-light transmitting region. |
