PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control the direction of the magnetization of a free magnetic layer in a direction orthogonal with an ideal track width direction and to enhance the symmetricalness of the reproduction output waveform of a spin valve MR sensor by lessening the influence of a magnetostatic bonding magnetic field form a pin magnetic layer to the free magnetic layer and possibly balancing the whole of a magnetrostatic field acting on the free magnetic layer to zero. SOLUTION: The MR film 5 is formed by laminating an antiferromagnetic layer 8, the pin magnetic layer 9, a nonmagnetic conductive layer 10 and the free magnetic layer 11 on a substrate 1. After this film is etched to the prescribed track width and depth, the rear end on the side opposite to the recording medium-facing surface 13 is ion milled at a certain angle with respect to a perpendicular direction from behind, by which the free magnetic layer 11, the nonmagnetic conductive layer 10 and the pin magnetic layer 9 are partially etched and inclined within an angle range of 15 to 60 deg. with a horizontal plane. The rear end of the free magnetic layer 11 exists forward from the rear ends of the pin magnetic layer 9 and the nonmagnetic conductive layer 10 and, therefore, the magnetic path of the magnetostatic bonding magnetic filed from the pin magnetic layer 9 to the free magnetic layer 11 is made longer and the influence thereof is lessened.
