PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an ion exchange membrane improved in the ionic conductance of conventional fluorine-containing ion exchange membranes and mechanical strength, and useful for use in fuel cells of solid polymer type, water electrolysis and the like by composing the membrane of a fluorine-containing polymer having a side chain with a specific functional group at its end. SOLUTION: This ion exchange membrane is composed of a fluorine- containing polymer having a side chain with a functional group (preferably a sulfonic acid group, carboxylic acid group) at its end; wherein the above functional group is chemically bound to the main chain of the above fluorine- containing polymer via one oxygen atom and one or two carbon atom(s). The above polymer is obtained, for instance, by copolymerizing a monomer of the formula Y-(CF2)a-(CFRt)b-O-CF=CF2 (Y is a group SO3H or the like; (a) and b are each 0-2 and a+b<=2; Rt is a 1-2C perfluoroalkyl or the like) and tetrafluoroethylene or the like. This ion exchange membrane has an exchange capacity of preferably 0.5-2.0 m equivalent/g. |
