PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lathe accurately performing work for a spherical curved surface with no influence of backlash. SOLUTION: A tool turning unit 17 is mounted in one tool station S of a tool rest 6. The tool turning unit 17, turnably setting up in forward/reverse a tool holder 19 in a unit base stand 18, is provided with a turn drive means 20 of the tool holder 19. The turn drive means 20 comprises a pinion 23 secured to the tool holder 19, rack 24, and an advance/retraction drive source 25 of fluid pressure cylinder or the like advancing/retracting this rack 24. A tool edge point 21a is moved by rotating the pinion 23 in a turn route with a center O of the pinion 23 serving as the center of turning.
