PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas-blast circuit breaker capable of cutting off a large current without enlarging the volume of space in a movable cylinder and without increasing a mechanical burden on an operating mechanism part. SOLUTION: A space in a movable cylinder 8 is partitioned into two chambers, a compression chamber Sb with a volume reduced by an opening motion and a pressure rising chamber Sa with a volume not reduced by an opening motion, the compression chamber Sb and the pressure rising chamber Sa communicate with each other via check valves 12, 13, and an exhaust hole 14 is provided in a side surface of an operation rod 5. In the early stage of an opening motion, the compression chamber Sb communicates with a middle part in the operation rod 5 via the exhaust hole 14, and in the late stage of the opening motion. the exhaust hole 14 is positioned nearer to an operating mechanism, (in the rear) than a puffer piston 7.
