PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new film which is capable of producing specified polarized light such as circularly polarized light or linearly polarized light as diffracted rays themselves. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing the film is constituted by forming a region exhibiting diffractiveness on a part of a cholesteric alignment film by transferring a diffraction pattern of a diffraction element substrate, under a heating and pressurizing condition of 40-300 deg.C and 0.05-80 MPa, to the cholesteric alignment film formed with a film material containing a polymer crystal with 1,000-100,000 weight-average molecular weight Mw measured with GPC (expressed in terms of polystyrene), <=5 molecular-weight distribution (Mw/Mn; expresses the number average molarular weight), 0.05-2.0 logarithmic viscosity number (0.5 g/dl concentration in the phenol-tetrachloroethane mixed solvent (60/40weight ratio) at 30 deg.C), <=200 deg.C glass transition temperature (Tg) and besides >=40 deg.C transition temperature(Ti) from a liquid crystal phase to an isotropic phase as the indispensable constituent.
