PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform correct demudulations of recorded information even when a peak shift exists in a read-out signal waveform by preparing peak interval values of respective bits constituting one character as a reference arrangement pattern for every character preliminarily and measuring time intervals among respective peaks of a reproduced signal and comparing individual peak interval values constituting the one character with the reference arrangement pattern. SOLUTION: Peak interval values of an object pattern are obtained and they are compared with templates which are preliminarily prepared and correlation values among the peak interval values and the templates are calculated, After calculations of correlation values are completed as to all templates becoming the object of comparisons, the maximum correlation value is obtained from among calculated correlation values and a character corresponding to the templates is obtained, Since this data demodulating method preliminarily prepares peak interval values of respective bits constituting one character as a reference arrangement pattern for every character and prepares time intervals of the reproduced signals as reference patterns and judges a character corresponding to a reference arrangement pattern indicating the highest similarity to be a corresponding character by measuring time intervals of the reproduced signal, the demodulating of recorded information is not affected by the jitter.
