PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a disk discriminating method capable of discriminating a plurality of optical disks automatically. SOLUTION: This disk discriminating method classifies a plurality of optical discs 2 into the group of optical disks whose reflectance are large and the group of optical disks whose reflectance are small from focus error signals and then discriminates whether a disk is a CD-related disk or a DVD-related disk by measuring the time between the reflected signals obtained from the surface of the optical disk and obtained from the recording surface of the disk. The discrimination between a DVD-single layer disk and a DVD-two layer disk is performed by counting the number of focus error signals from the recording surface of the disk which is obtained by moving an optical pickup 1. Moreover, the discrimination between a CD disk and a CD-R disk is performed by counting the number of focus error signals obtained from a CD laser and a DVD laser.
