PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically extract the character recognition object area of the slip of an unknown format by extracting the feature of a picture form picture data and judging whether the same feature exists in the feature of a medium which is registered in a format storage memory or not. SOLUTION: A picture input part 1 inputs the picture of a slip-sheet being an input object as picture data and stores it in a picture data storage memory 2. All or a part of slip format information of a classification object, which is previously registered as a classification object, is stored in a slip format storage memory 3. A slip identification part 4 extracts feature information from picture data stored in the picture data storage memory 2 while slip identification feature information stored in the slip format storage memory 3 is referred to and the slip is identified. When it can be identified, the processing object area which is stored in the format storage memory 3 is read and the processing object area which is read is processed.
