PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To current uneven density in the subscanning direction by discriminating whether or not image data after shading correction is within a desired density level. SOLUTION: A comparator circuit 26 that receives image data Dn after shading correction by a shading correction circuit 18, detects image data with an image data level X in an expression of Dn<0.95X or Dn>1.05X. Thus, a value and an address of the image data at the outside of X±5% are stored in a density unevenness data RAM 27. In the case of reading a usual original, the value and the address of the image data at the outside of X±5% are received from the density unevenness data RAM 27, in order to correct the data Dn read at present to have the target image data level X, a correction coefficient (X/Dn) derived from an expression 'read image data (/255)×X/Dn' is generated and the image data at this address are processed.
