PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively use an inexpensive cold cathode lamp by utilizing a high speed mode of an image sensor so as to apply dimmer control to, e.g. reading of a negative film and to suppress density fluctuation in the sub-scanning direction by reducing a standby time of an optical system in the case of the dimmer control. SOLUTION: In the case of reading a negative film, a cold cathode lamp dimmer circuit 203 sets a luminous quantity of a cold cathode lamp 7 thrice through a transmission original unit I/F circuit 217. Then a high speed CCD drive method changeover means 218 is switched to a binary reading monochromatic read mode (high speed mode). In this case, for example, the negative film is read in a single color (e.g. G), a storage time of a CCD 201 is decreased to 1/3 so as to realize high speed drive of the CCD 201.
