PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an auto-tension device capable of automatically controlling tension applied to a string material to be no more than predetermined tension and changing-over between a tension applied condition and a hoisting condition with simple operation, independently from up-and-down movement due to waves given by hoisted objects and a ship. SOLUTION: An auto-tension device for adjusting the tension of a hoisting mechanism mounted on a ship crane includes a reduction gear 1, a lifting hydraulic motor 3 (a lifting fluid pressure driving source) connected to a driving shaft 2 of the reduction gear 1, a tension applying hydraulic motor 5 (a tension applying liquid pressure driving source) connected to a driving shaft 4 of the reduction gear 1, a drum 7 connected to an output shaft 6 of the reduction gear 1, a wire rope 8 (a string material) wound on the drum 7 and a hydraulic controller (a fluid pressure controller) for supplying and stopping operating oil to the motor 3 and changing-over its supply direction to provide supply and stop of the operating oil to the motor 5 and hold is oil pressure.
