PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain, in high yield, the subject compound useful as a raw material for synthesizing intermediates in the production of organic fine chemicals such as agrochemicals, by reacting a specific dihalobenzene compound with a specific Grignard reactant. SOLUTION: This compound of formula II (e.g. a compound of formula III) is obtained by reacting (A) a 5-alkyo-1-bromo-2,4-dihalobenzene of formula I (R1 is an alkyl; X1 and X2 are each fluorine or chlorine) (e.g. 5-isopropoxy-1- bromo-4-fluoro-2-chlorobenzene) with (B) a Grignard reactant of the formula RMgY [R is an alkyl or a (substituted) aryl; Y is a halogen] (e.g. 2- buthylmagnesium chloride), using pref. 1.0-1.2 molar equivalent of the component B based on 1 mol of the component A, pref. at -5 deg.C to 5 deg.C. This compound is useful as a raw material for synthesizing e.g. a 5-alkoxy-2,4- dihalophenylglyoxylic alkyl ester.
