PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To industrially advantageously and safely obtain in high yield at low cost the subject compound useful as an intermediate for synthesizing medicaments such as antiviral agents by reaction of a specific dioxane compound with a specific organic acid in the presence of water. SOLUTION: This compound of formula II (e.g. 1-acetoxy-2-acetoxymethyl-4- benzyloxybutane) is obtained by reaction of a 1,3-dioxane compound of formula I [R1 and R2 are each H, a (substituted)alkyl, aryl or aralkyl; R3 is a (substituted)aralkyl] (e.g. 5-hydroxyethyl-2-isopropyl-1,3-dioxane) with an organic acid of the formula: R4COOH [R4 is H, a (substituted) alkyl, aryl or aralkyl] (e.g. acetic acid) in the presence of water pref. at 0-200 deg.C, more pref. 50-150 deg.C normally for 5-30 h; wherein the molar ratios of the water to the compound of formula I and of the organic acid to the compound of formula I are pref. 0.1-20 and 2-30, respectively.
