PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively cool the sealing part of a high-pressure metal vapor discharge lamp. SOLUTION: A thickened part 53 and a thinned part 54 are formed on the windward side and the leeward side respectively, for a sealing part 45 where a jointing part of molybdenum foil 43 to a lead wire 44 is sealed. A connecting surface part 55 is formed between the thickened part 53 and the thinned part 54. By making the shape of the sealing part 45 asymmetrical on the windward and leeward sides like this to reduce air flow resistance and to promote the flow of the cooling air, the temperature of the jointing part of the molybdenum foil 43 to the lead wire 44 is restricted to 350 deg.C or below.
