PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decrease the throughput of a connected area extraction processing as a whole and to increase the processing speed for a connected area extraction device and a recording medium. SOLUTION: This device includes a circumscribed rectangle calculation means 12A which calculates a circumscribed rectangle from the inputted binary image data, an overlapping decision means 13A which decides whether the calculated circumscribed rectangle is overlapping another circumscribed rectangle, a subdivision means 15A which subdivides an overlapping circumscribed rectangle, an output means 16A and a single-label decision means 14A which calculates the longitudinal and lateral sizes of the overlapping circumscribed rectangle for the overlapping circumscribed rectangle and decides a single label with no other overlapping labels included in a relevant label if the said longitudinal or lateral size is smaller than two pixels. Then the data on the circumscribed rectangle are sent to the means 16A if a single label is decided or sent to the means 15A if no single label is decided.
