A standby mode power supply provides an output voltage for the video display apparatus during the standby mode of operation. A switched mode power supply controller circuit provides drive pulses to the run mode power supply during the run mode and to the standby mode power supply during the standby mode. A snubber circuit of the standby power supply is used to turn off a start-up transistor during the standby mode of operation to prevent power dissipation in a start-up resistor.
