PURPOSE: A license plate number recognition system is provided to be installed independently of other system, and recognize sequentially the license plate number on a front panel and a rear panel of the same vehicle. CONSTITUTION: A license plate number recognition system comprises a host computer(25), a number recognizer(30), a lighting device(35), a digital camera(40), a vehicle sensor(45) and an extension connector(50). The number recognizer(30) includes a main processor, a camera interface, an image buffer, a lens controller, a memory, a recognition program memory, a serial interface. The camera interface receives an image of a license plate number from a camera, which gets stored in the image buffer. The recognition program stored in the memory drives a recognition of the license plate number image. The camera lens controller adjusts the image of the license plate number plate taken by the camera. The recognized license plate number is transmitted to the host computer(25). The vehicle sensor(45) senses an entrance and an exit of the vehicle.
