PURPOSE: An apparatus for transmitting and treating group messages in an electronic mail system is provided so that simplification of information treatment can be performed by optimizing a structure of message. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for transmitting and treating group messages includes several devices. A sender forms a desired initial message to be transmitted to a plurality of addressees(1). In a step 2, a set of subsidiary message is formed as an initial message to the respective addresses in a group including the number of N of addressees. In a step 3, the sender forms a multi-level catalogue of the initial message(for example, considering tow levels). In a step 4, the number of N of messages are transmitted to the addressees. During the reception of the transmitted subsidiary messages(5), in an addressee group of a step 6, the respective addressees form a confirmation message, that is, a character of a unique identifier ID_i of the received message is recorded and a character of STATUS_i for characterizing the present state of message transmitted to an i-th addressee is inserted additionally to the identification message.
