PRODUCTION OF AMORPHOUS BORON POWDER

PURPOSE: A process for preparing boron powder by compression molding a mixture of boron oxide powder and magnesium powder in a proper size and reacting in a reactor that is under inactive atmosphere is provided which can produce high purity amorphous boron carbide powder at low cost. CONSTITUTION: A mixture of boron oxide powder having a size smaller than 10 mesh and magnesium powder having a size smaller than 50 mesh and carbon powder in a molar in a molar ratio of 1.0 : 3.0 to 1.0 : 4.0 is reacted under vacuum or inactive atmosphere to give boron powder. The process has advantages of synthesizing economically within a short time and obtaining high purity boron carbide powder.
