PURPOSE: A process for preparing boron carbide powder by mixing KNO3 or NaNO3 powder as an exothermic additive with a mixture of boron oxide powder, magnesium powder and carbon powder is provided which can continuously produce boron carbide powder without using a chemical furnace at low cost. CONSTITUTION: A mixture of boron oxide powder having a smaller size than 50 mesh, magnesium powder having a smaller size than 100 mesh and carbon powder in a molar ratio of 2.0 : 6.2 to 6.5 : 1.4 to 1.6 is mixed with KNO3 or NaNO3 powder as an exothermic additive and reacted under inactive atmosphere to give the boron carbide powder. The process has advantages of synthesizing economically within a short time and obtaining high purity boron carbide powder without using a chemical furnace.
