The vehicle (1) has a mechanism (8) which extends from the side of the vehicle to grip the refuse bin. The bin is lifted and tilted to discharge the refuse into the container (4). The bin is then returned to the roadside. The contents of the container can be compacted when necessary by a hydraulic ram system (5, 6, 7). The operation is controlled by the driver (22), using a control joystick (23) as he monitors the outputs of two TV cameras (12, 20).
