PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a device which is colored in a good state at about 1 V and which has excellent responding property, durability against repeated driving and durability by incorporating an org. compd. having both of a structure having both of cathodic electrochromic characteristics and a structure having an anodic electrochromic characteristics into an ionic conductive layer. SOLUTION: This device has a structure of an ionic conductive layer 3 having dispersion of a compd. interposed between a transparent conductive substrate consisting of a transparent substrate 1 and a transparent electrode layer 2 laminated on the substrate surface, and a conductive substrate consisting of a transparent or opaque substrate 5 and a transparent, opaque or reflective electrode layer 4 formed on the substrate 5 surface. That is, this electrochromic device has the ionic conductive layer 3 disposed between two conductive substrates at least one of which is transparent, and the ionic conductive layer 3 contains an org. compd. having both of a structure having cathodic electrochromic characteristics and a structure having an anodic electrochromic characteristics.
