PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup device for appropriately executing white balance control on a main object and a background in strobe photographing under outer light by discriminating a main object area and a background area from a whole image area and setting the area based on information on a first image which is picked up by irradiation. SOLUTION: When an photographer operates a release key, first exposure is executed with strobe irradiation. The obtained image is set as a first image. The level of the first image is compared with a prescribed level in an image element unit. The position of the image element whose level is not less than the prescribed level is registered as a main object area and the other position of the image element whose level is under the prescribed level is registered as a background area. The discrimination/setting of the area and a while balance processing, which are main operations, are executed by permitting a system controller 2 to control a digital process circuit 8. Thus, a strobe-taken image where appropriate white balance control is executed on a main object and a background can be obtained.
