PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To retrieve the recorded contents of a tape by recording the information of absolute addresses from the winding start of a magnetic tape to the current position on the magnetic tape on the basis of a VISS signal recorded in a CTL signal when recording is started, comparing stored and reproduced information with stored information and performing fast forwarding a section between the change point of a program and the next change point. SOLUTION: First, video recording start/end unit data is read from a memory 16 and the absolute address of a target is set. Then, the target absolute address read from the memory 16 and a cassette tape 28 are moved toward a video recording start/end unit. A tape moving time is calculated according to the difference of the tape 28 from the current absolute address, the moving time calculated in the process of cassette tape movement is compared with a moving time calculated by the counting of a CTL signal, when the both coincide with each other, the current absolute address of the tape 28 is read, and when it is compared with the target absolute address and they coincide with each other, the moving of the tape 28 is stopped and program searching is finished.
