PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a granular type magnetic recording medium capable of controlling thermal agitation of a recording state in a so-called granular type magnetic recording medium comprising magnetic grains deposited and magnetically separated in a non magnetic matrix and of high density recording. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium is a granular type magnetic recording medium comprising magnetic grains consisting of at least one kind of element selected from iron(Fe), cobalt(Co) and nickel(Ni) and at least one kind of element selected from rare earth elements, the magnetic grains being deposited into a matrix consisting of at least one non magnetic substance selected from rare earth oxides, rare earth nitrides and rare earth carbides.
