System has power supply path (24) configured to supply power sequentially to the paper handling units (14,16,18). At start-up paper handling units have lower level of power i.e. are in rest state, energy save or off. As power is supplied to bring each unit sequentially to high power state, each unit sends signal to processor (22). Processor uses signals received, to identify relative physical position of units to each other and to the copier, printer (12). INDEPENDENT CLAIM is included for imaging system.
