Automatic transmission controls for vehicle stop response includes a vehicle speed sensor and a vehicle stop predictor responsive to the speed sensor in immediate mode. An input coupling control is used to reduce the hydraulic servo drive pressure from the normal engaged setting to a waiting pressure which maintains normal engaged pressure. The condition of this waiting pressure is used to free the coupling at the same time as the neutral control operation starts. In addition to this, a brake (B) sensor checks on possible brake pedal depression and the stop predictor warns of stop action on the basis of brake sensor signal as well as that from speed sensor. This prediction is also based on a throttle sensor reporting the throttle state.
