PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the characteristic of slag flow generated by such as, a melting furnace. SOLUTION: Mean brightness data is calculated by imaging slag flow, memorizing the brightness data of a plurality of the image frames, and selecting the brightness data of several frames out of the image frames. Then, the brightness difference data which is the difference between the brightness data of a current frame and the mean brightness data is obtained, the brightness difference data is corrected to emphasize the high brightness pixels and binary data are obtained by converting the corrected data to the binary data. By specifying the high brightness pixel group, the center of the gravity of it is detected and the flowing speed of the slag flow is calculated from the transferring distance and transferring time of the center of the gravity. The width and the flow out position of the slag flow are detected based on the mean brightness data or the horizontal brightness distribution of the binary data. The volume speed, the mass speed and the estimated amount of the flow out in the predetermined time can be calculated from this flow out speed, the width, etc.
