Foundry sand regeneration, by batch or discontinuous used sand cooling and/or moistening and binder addition in a mixing chamber before intermediate storage, is new. A foundry sand regeneration process comprises subjecting used sand to intermediate storage, mixing with fresh sand and additive, especially binder, and conditioning for use in new mould production, at least part of the additive being added to the used sand before intermediate storage during a batch or discontinuous cooling operation carried out in a mixing chamber for cooling and/or moistening of the sand. The cooling operation is carried out by (a) filling the mixing chamber (6) with a certain quantity of sand; (b) adding a certain quantity of water while mixing the sand, extracting waste air and supplying fresh air; (c) terminating waste air extraction and adding a certain quantity of additive while mixing the sand; and (d) emptying the mixing chamber. An Independent claim is also included for a plant for carrying out the above process.
