One-stage production of liquid crystal (LC) monomers (I), containing acryloyl groups, comprises reacting mesogenic alcohols (II) with 3-chloropropionic esters (III), with elimination of hydrogen chloride (HCl). One-stage production of liquid crystal (LC) monomers of formula (I), containing acryloyl groups, comprises reacting mesogenic alcohols of formula (II) with 3-chloropropionic esters of formula (III), with elimination of hydrogen chloride (HCl). (Z-Y<1>-A<2>-Y<2>-)mM(-O-A<1>-acryl)n (I) (Z-Y<1>-A<2>-Y<2>-)mM(OH)n (II) ClPr-A<1>-X (III) acryl = an acrylate group; ClPr = a 3-chloropropionate group; A<1> = alkyl chain spacers with 2-20 carbon (C) atoms, in which non-adjacent C atoms can be linked by ether oxygen (-O-), thioether sulfur (-S-) or imino groups; A<2> = A<1> or a single bond; M = a mesogenic group; X = a labile group; Z = alkyl or a cross-linkable group; Y<1>, Y<2> = a chemical bond, -O-, -S-, -O-CO-, -CO-O-, -O-CO-O-, -CO-NR<1>-, -NR<1>-CO-, -O-CO-NR<1>-, -NR<1>-CO-O- or -NR<1>-CO-NR<1>-; R<1> = hydrogen (H) or 1-4 C alkyl; n = 1, 2, 3 or 4; and m = 0, 1, 2 or 3.
