A cylindrical ring (12) encircling the cylindrical surface in the piston (1) forms an integral part of the cylinder head seal (7) and lies without clearance in a recess (13) in the piston surface (14). The sides of the crankcase (6) directly enclosing the cylinder are also recessed (17) or else the cylinder liner (3) can be recessed. Otherwise the crankcase areas facing the encircled cylinder head (2) or the parts of the liner are angled off 90 deg to the cylinder surface (14). The ring (12) extends from the cylinder head seal (7) to the position adopted by the piston (9) nearest the cylinder head (2) in the piston top dead center position. The ring (12) has wall thickness of 0.5-2 mm and is formed from the head seal material.
