The appliance has vertically moveable weights (2), and a holder bar (5) releasably connected to one of the weights. The bar engages an impact damper unit (8) when in an intermediate position, which is close to the rest position of a weight. When the holder bar is lowered, the damper is compressed against a damper force. The damper unit has two one oil or air pressure shock absorbers (10), which carry a common impact plate charged by the holder bar.
