A nonlinear resistor has a matrix containing spherical varistor filler particles which are partially covered by conductive particles and/or which comprise a dense packing of coarse and fine particles. A nonlinear resistor, with varistor properties, comprises a matrix containing an embedded powder filler of sintered varistor granules with spherical doped metal oxide particles of crystalline grains separated by grain boundaries. The filler contains additional electrically conductive particles which cover no more than part of the spherical particle surfaces and/or the varistor granules comprise two different particle size fractions, the coarser particles forming a dense sphere packing with gaps filled by the finer particles. An Independent claim is also included for production of the above nonlinear resistor.
