PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain the miniaturization of a device while restraining the loss of light quantity. SOLUTION: As to this illuminator and this projector; a luminous flux from a light source 1 is resolved into the three colors of the light of red, green and blue whose optical paths are mutually different by a color resolving system 5, a picture display element displaying a picture corresponding to the respective colors of light is illuminated with the respective colors of light, and the color light beams from the three picture display elements are synthesized by a color synthesizing system constituted of a cross dichroic prism 11. An optical system 8 with concave mirrors 81 and 83 and without a condensing lens is provided on a red optical path which is longer than another optical paths among the three optical paths of three colors of light.
