A process for the preparation of a polymerisable monomer of formula I <EMI ID=1.1 HE=34 WI=42 LX=840 LY=559 TI=CF> <PC>comprising the step of contacting a compound of formula II <EMI ID=1.2 HE=41 WI=42 LX=843 LY=975 TI=CF> <PC>with an immobilised acid,<BR> wherein X, Y, Z, R<SP>1</SP>, P and Q are independently selected from a hydrocarbyl group or hydrogen and wherein A is (CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>n</SB> wherein n is 0 or 1. The invention also relates to an ocular polymer obtained by the polymerisation of the above monomer. |
