Contactless strip flatness measurement using ultrasound for stress analysis to determine the flatness of travelling strip is new. A process for contactless flatness measurement of travelling metal strip comprises: (a) directing longitudinal and/or transverse ultrasonic waves into the travelling strip; (b) measuring the wave travel time; (c) measuring at least the longitudinal and/or transverse stress distribution of the longitudinal stresses, integrated over the strip thickness, on the basis of changes in the sound velocity of the waves; and (d) determining the corresponding longitudinal residual stress distribution and the resulting non-flatness of the strip from the stress distribution. An Independent claim is also included for equipment for carrying out the above process.
