PURPOSE: A brake device is provided to reduce a size of a shaft assembly and to improve the assembling property of the brake device. CONSTITUTION: A brake device for a washing machine contains a brake drum(55) combined with an outer circumference of a ring gear to shield a reduction gear device and combined with a spin basket shaft; a brake band(65) screwed with a lower casing(49) and combined with a brake lever(33) through a fixing pin(75); and the brake lever(33) to contact and separate the brake band(65) from the brake drum(55). The brake lever(33) has a brake lever shaft(67) in parallel with the brake drum(55). The brake lever shaft(67) is installed in an upper casing(47) and the lower casing(49) by penetrating the brake lever(33). A brake link(69) is combined based on the brake lever shaft(67). A brake spring(71) is installed inside the brake lever(65) to elastically support the brake lever(33).
