PURPOSE: A method for equalizing a battery is provided to increase the usable energy of the battery by equalizing the state of charge in each module of the battery. CONSTITUTION: A control section determines whether an order of a module voltage is changed when a battery charging signal is generated. If the order of the module voltage is changed, the changed module is converted into an equalizing aim module and an equalizing reference module, then, the capacitance difference is detected. Based on the detected capacitance difference, the equalizing aim module is charged with a static current. At the same time, a protecting routine is carried out to determine whether the equalizing of the aim module is completed. If the aim module is equalized, the control section checks whether another battery to be equalized remains. Then, if the battery to be equalized is not existed, the equalizing routine is finished. Then, a charging mode is checked. Based on the charging mode, the equalizing aim module is charged. At the same time, the protecting routine is carried out to determine whether the equalizing of the aim module is completed. If the aim module is equalized, the control section checks whether another battery to be equalized remains. Then, if the battery to be equalized is not existed, the equalizing routine is finished.
