PURPOSE: A water pump for an internal combustion engine is provided to change the shape of an impeller of the water pump without changing the design of a pump housing and an engine layout, thereby improving the capacity of the water pump. CONSTITUTION: A water pump for an internal combustion engine includes a water pump shaft(7) embedded in a water pump housing(1) for receiving rotational power from a crank shaft of an engine, and an impeller(11) mounted at the water pump shaft and having a plurality of blades to pump cooling water, wherein the impeller includes a plurality of through holes formed at a flange connecting a boss and the plurality of blades of the impeller at equal gaps in a circumference direction to improve the capacity of pumping.
