PURPOSE: A fingerprint image comparing method having an invariability of rotation and shift is provided to compare a rotated or a shifted fingerprint with an original fingerprint quickly by defining a radius of a circle including three characteristic points of the fingerprint. CONSTITUTION: A main control part finds a circle including three characteristic points of registration fingerprint data(step2). And, the main control part receives comparison object fingerprint data in order to compare the comparison object fingerprint data with registration fingerprint data(step3). At this time, characteristic points are extracted from the comparison object fingerprint data. The main control part forms a group of the characteristic points, and generates characteristic data of the group(step4). After this, the main control part compares the group with a group of registration fingerprint data, and checks whether there is a similar group or not(step5). At this time, the main control part compares a radius of a circle including the characteristic points of the group with the radius of the circle including the characteristic points of registration fingerprint data. When there are the similar groups, the main control part checks whether the similar groups are within an allowable error region or not(step7). After this, the main control part decides that the group of the characteristic points is accorded with the group with a group of registration fingerprint data, and accords coordinate axises of the two group(step8).
