PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a base paper for a corrugated cardboard excellent in surface properties, gloss of white paper and gloss of printed paper, obtained by aiming the finish of the printing excellent in repeatability of halftone dots, and capable of preventing the break at a rule when producing a box, without carrying out a pigment coating. SOLUTION: An aqueous composition consisting essentially of water and optionally a water-soluble material in an amount regulated so that the amount of the coated water may be 0.5-10 g/m2 is coated on one surface of a base paper, and the coated base paper just after the coating is subjected to a soft calender treatment to produce the objective base paper for a corrugated cardboard suitable for a decoration printing use. The coating means of the aqueous composition is a machine calender. The base paper for the corrugated cardboard obtained by the method has >=50 sec smoothness based on J Tappi paper pulp testing method No. 5, and >=20% glossiness based on JIS-P-8142.
