PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a smectic liquid crystal composition which can be easily driven by active element driving by using a specific compound of which the spontaneous polarization (Ps) at a specified temperature is lower than a specified value. SOLUTION: This composition comprises at least two compounds which are selected from among compounds represented by the formula: QC*HVW, among which the order of H, V and W are the same when Q is arranged at the end and the structures of Q, V and W are different, and among which a compound having the optical axis inclining in the inverse direction under the application of electric field is included. The spontaneous polarization (Ps) at 30 deg.C is lower than 90 nC/cm2. In the formula, Q is represented by formula I (wherein R is a 3-30C alkyl or a fluoroalkyl; X is COO, OCO, or the like; A1, A2 and A3 are each a group represented by formula II, or the like; Y1 and Y2 are each COO, OCO, or the like; and (m) and (n) are each 0 or 1); V is a 2-5C alkyl or a fluoroalkyl; and W is a 2-10C alkyl or a fluoroalkyl provided that the main chain of W contains O, S, or the like and that the number of carbon atoms of W is higher than that of V. This composition exhibits a good alignment when voltage is not applied and can make gray scale display and high-speed response.
