PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ultrasonic imaging system having an adaptive space filter. SOLUTION: A filter coefficient of an adaptive space filter 26 is determined for a certain image parameter sample by counting the number of adjacent image parameter samples having zero or a value near zero. When the numbers of zero or the value near zero are larger than prescribed thresholds in a data window, the data in this window passes, e.g. is not processed by a filter. In using the filter 26, it has two advantages over other space filters. First, an image parameter data sample having only zero or the value near zero (e.g. isolated point noise) does not spread. Second, a boundary such as a color edge in blood vessel (an area surrounded by black areas e.g. an area whose parameter of color image is zero or a value near zero) is less smoothed than in the conventional filters, and the sharpness of the edge can be maintained. |
