PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject composition capable of exhibiting antibacterial activities only against harmful Staphylococcus aureus, and manifesting sufficient therapeutic and prophylactic activities to skin diseases by formulating farnesol and xylitol. SOLUTION: This selective antibacterial composition is obtained by formulating (A) farnesol and (B) xylitol. Preferably, the component A of 0.001-10 wt.% and the component B of 0.01-30 wt.% are formulated therewith. The composition is preferably used as a preparation for external for skin. As a result, epidermic Staphylococcus present on healthy skin is distinguished from the harmful Staphylococcus aureus present on the skin suffering from skin diseases, and the composition can exhibit the selective antibacterial activities only against the harmful bacteria of the latter, and is expected to be used as a prophylactic and therapeutic agent for skin diseases such as dermatitis.
