PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject composition capable of exhibiting excellent fire-retardancy without using a halogen-containing compound by combinedly using a novolak epoxy resin, a phenolaralkyl resin or a napthalenearalkyl resin with a phosphorus atom-containing compound. SOLUTION: This composition contains (A) a novolak-epoxy resin (preferably a phenol-novolak-epoxy resin), (B) a hardener comprising a phenolaralkyl resin of formula I [(n) is a natural number) or a naphthalenearalkyl resin) and (C) a phosphorus atom-containing compound not containing a halogen in the molecule (preferably 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthren-1-oxide) as essential components. A prepreg for a printed wiring board can be obtained by impregnating the composition to a substrate. Further, a fire-retardant laminated board or a copper-clad laminate is obtained by superposing more than one of the prepreg and heating and pressing.
